TABC Launches New Smartphone/Tablet App Designed to Save Time for Licensed Businesses

AUSTIN – A new mobile application from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission allows alcoholic beverage industry members to devote more time to running their businesses and less time on regulatory inspections.

The TABC: Compliance Reporting (CR) application gives license and permit holders the ability to conduct inspections of their businesses quickly and easily using their smart device in lieu of an on-site inspection by TABC. The free app is now available for download on the iOS and Android stores. Once downloaded, license/permit holders can designate themselves and their employees as authorized persons to use the app for conducting and completing their required annual compliance reports.

Previously, compliance inspections were conducted by TABC auditors and enforcement agents who could show up at TABC-licensed businesses unannounced and spend up to an hour on site with the owner or their employees. The CR app automates the process by allowing businesses to answer a series of simple questions, take photos of inspection-related items, and submit their responses directly to TABC via a smartphone or tablet—all in about 15 minutes. With this new tool, businesses have the power to schedule their own compliance inspections and save valuable time in the process.

"The overall goal is to increase efficiency, both for licensed businesses and for TABC," said TABC Executive Director Bentley Nettles. "Not only does the CR app reduce the amount of time business owners spend on regulatory inspections, it also allows the agency to spend less time conducting routine inspections of businesses with a history of full compliance and instead focus our efforts on areas where there's a known risk to public safety."

Some businesses, including the Kroger grocery chain, are already seeing benefits from the CR app.

"TABC's Compliance Reporting mobile application has created enhanced efficiencies that will enable our company to expedite thorough and timely inspection reports," said Susan Brunner, Kroger regulatory compliance manager.

This week's launch of the CR app gives businesses several months to familiarize themselves with the application and the new processes before its use becomes mandatory on September 1, 2019. Beginning September 1, businesses will have 90 days to complete and submit the report using the CR app. In the coming weeks, TABC will offer training videos and other materials to assist businesses in the transition.
